“There is a strong parallel between mountain climbing and mathematics research. When first attempts on a summit are made, the struggle is to find any route. Once on the top, other possible routes up may be discerned and sometimes a safer or shorter route can be chosen for the descent or for subsequent ascents. In mathematics the challenge is finding a proof in the first place. Once found, almost any competent mathematician can usually find an alternative often much better and shorter proof. At least in mountaineering we know that the mountain is there and that, if we can find a way up and reach the summit, we shall triumph. In mathematics we do not always know that there is a result, or if the proposition is only a figment of the imagination, let alone whether a proof can be found.”

“Existe um forte paralelo entre o alpinismo e a investigação em matemática. Quando são feitas as primeiras tentativas até ao cume, a luta é para encontrar qualquer caminho. Uma vez no topo, outras rotas possíveis para cima podem ser discernidas e às vezes uma rota mais segura ou mais curta pode ser escolhida para a descida ou para subidas subsequentes. Em matemática, o desafio é encontrar uma prova em primeiro lugar. Uma vez encontrada, quase todos os matemáticos competentes podem geralmente encontrar uma alternativa de prova, muitas vezes muito melhor e mais curta. Pelo menos no montanhismo sabemos que a montanha está lá e que, se conseguirmos subir e chegar ao cume, triunfaremos. Na matemática, nem sempre sabemos se existe um resultado ou se a proposição é apenas uma invenção da imaginação, quanto mais se uma prova pode ser encontrada.”
