Maryam Mirzakhani (1977 – 2017) foi uma matemática iraniana.
Maryam foi a única mulher a ganhar a Medalha Fields (2014). Recebeu esta medalha no dia 13 de agosto de 2014 no Congresso Internacional de Matemática, realizado em Seul, Coreia do Sul. A citação afirma que o prémio foi:
“... for her outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces.”
Maryam foi professora na Universidade de Stanford e fez uma série de contribuições marcantes para a geometria e sistemas dinâmicos. O seu trabalho une vários campos matemáticos - incluindo geometria hiperbólica, análise complexa, topologia e dinâmica - influenciando profundamente todos eles.
Marc Tessier-Lavigne, Presidente da Universidade de Stanford referiu na altura da sua morte:
“Maryam is gone far too soon, but her impact will live on for the thousands of women she inspired to pursue math and science. Maryam was a brilliant mathematical theorist, and also a humble person who accepted honours only with the hope that it might encourage others to follow her path. Her contributions as both a scholar and a role model are significant and enduring, and she will be dearly missed here at Stanford and around the world.”
